Shoes and eyewear for a cause
It’s not often that buying a simple pair of comfortable shoes makes the world a better place. Well, unless you’re shopping at TOMS of course.
While it sparked a global movement, the TOMS story started innocently enough. In 2006, American traveller Blake Mycoskie befriended children in a small village in Argentina and discovered that they would spend their days without shoes to protect their feet. While donations and fundraisers could have helped for a short period of time, Blake wanted to make sure that the giving never stopped, people never forgot.
So he decided to create TOMS. A company that would actually match every pair of shoes purchased with a pair of new shoes given to a child in need. Literally, One for One. His entrepreneurial and socially responsible company soon grew into a global phenomenon, with everyone who’s anyone donning a pair of the flat, espadrille style shoes, emblazoned with funky graphics or simple bold colours.
But oh no, he did not stop there. Soon after launching TOMS, Blake launched a range of eyewear, with the same principle. For every pair purchased, TOMS helps give sight to a person in need.
Take that corporate greed!
